President Kibaki last night appointed the Commission of Inquiry that will probe all aspects of last year’s General Election.

The six-member Commission that is expected to dig up all aspects of the election that ended in widespread bloody violence will begin its work next week.

A statement from State House said: "President Mwai Kibaki has appointed a Commission of Inquiry to inquire into all aspects of the General Election held on 27th December, 2007, with particular emphasis on the Presidential Election."

The statement said a gazette notice signed at State House, Nairobi by President Kibaki affirmed that the Commission of Inquiry would be headed by respected South African Judge, Justice Johann Kriegler.

Kriegler once headed South Africa’s post-apartheid Independent Electoral Commission after the 1994 election.

He was born in Pretoria in 1932 and matriculated at King Edward Vll School.

He attended the South African Military Academy after which he acted as a judge’s clerk while studying law at the University of Pretoria and the University of South Africa. After obtaining his LLB degree in 1958, he was called to the Johannesburg Bar in 1959.

Mr Horacio Boneo from Argentina has been involved in electoral assistance and observation in more than 60 countries.

Lady Justice Imani Daudi Aboud is a Tanzanian while Kenyans named in the team are Prof Marangu M’Marete, who was forwarded by PNU, and Mr Francis Angila Aywa and Ms Catherine Muyeka Mumma, both of ODM.

A second PNU representative, Ms Wanza Kioko, declined a proposal to be appointed to the team. The party was still searching for a replacement.

Malawian Lady Justice Annastasia Msosa, who had been proposed for the team, was not appointed.
